Recent Guilford College graduate Tyler Sanborn (Elkin High ’06) has been invited to play on the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA Summer League team July 9-16 in Las Vegas.

Sanborn, a 6-10, 260-pound center, will join other free agents, draft picks and young players on the Lakers’ entry into the 22-team league. For the second consecutive year, a team of NBA Development League Select players will also participate in the action taking place at the Thomas & Mack Center and the COX Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Los Angeles’ team opens play July 9 against Detroit at COX Pavilion.

Sanborn, who completed pre-NBA Draft tryouts with the Lakers as well as Memphis and Charlotte, is coming off a stellar season that concluded a brilliant career. He captured three 2010 NCAA Division III player of the year awards after compiling 30 double-doubles and averaging 19.8 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 33 games.

A two-time All-American, Sanborn stands 16th among the Quakers’ career scoring leaders (1,398), fourth in rebounds (1,133) and third in blocks (200). He helped Guilford to a 104-19 record, four NCAA Tournament appearances and two national semifinal berths in his four seasons.

Sanborn looks to join former teammate Ben Strong ’08 as recent Guilford graduates in professional basketball. Strong just wrapped up his second season with Maccabi Haifa in the top Israeli professional league. Guilford has produced four NBA players: M.L. Carr ’73, World B. Free ’76, Greg Jackson ’74 and Bob Kauffman ’68.
