BOONVILLE – Last season, an upstart East Wilkes volleyball team came to Starmount during the middle of the season and surprised the favored Rams.

There would be no such repeat Thursday night. Starmount took control quickly and rolled to a 25-5, 25-14 and 25-15 triumph. The Rams improved to 2-0 in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference, 3-2 overall. The Cardinals dropped to 1-1 in the MVAC, beating Elkin earlier in the week.

Amber Wooten and Ashton Gregory proved double-trouble for East Wilkes to contain. Gregory recorded 11 kills, while Wooten had 10. Both players earned three blocks. Brinsley Stewart and Olivia Gough each had four kills for the Rams. Gough made five digs.

Serving proved a strong point for Starmount. Josie Matthews was a perfect 15-for-15 from the service line, acing the Cards three times. Stewart was 14-for-16 in serving with seven aces. Ashley Wilkins also was perfect in serves, putting all 16 of her attempts perfectly into play, with one ace. Kayla Casstevens went 6-for-6 in serving with one ace.

Matthews enjoyed a solid all-around game, recording four digs and a block. Setter Erin Barr had 23 assists, two aces and one dig. Sydney Caudle had four assists. Sam Couch provided two digs.
