Elite Eight football power rankings: Week 7

We’ve reached the mid-point of the high school football season. Six weeks in the books, six more weeks to be played. With regards to our weekly Elite Eight power rankings, no one is where they started at the beginning of the season. Go figure.

Forbush-Starmount soccer showdown postponed

Rainy weather on Wednesday has forced the postponement of the Starmount at Forbush boys soccer game, which had been scheduled for tonight (Thursday). The county rivalry contest now will be played on Monday, Oct. 18.

Elkin runner edits another course record

Elkin’s Zach Millsaps set a new course record on his way to a cross country meet victory at West Wilkes on Tuesday afternoon.

Starmount spikers edged by visiting Carson

Volleyball players from Starmount and Carson high schools did their best to spike cancer Wednesday evening in the Rams’ annual Cure For Cancer match. The two stellar teams also treated fans to one heck of a duel.

Sertoma youth football scoreboard: Sept. 25

The drive is on for playoff spots in the Sertoma Youth Football League. There is just one full week of regular season play remaining, plus some make-up games on Oct. 9. But very little has been decided in the way of divisional champions.

A much-anticipated soccer match-up between Starmount and Wilkes Central, scheduled for Tuesday night, has been postponed because of the recent wet weather. The Starmount-Forbush game is still on for Thursday night.

A vaunted rushing attack has been the signature of the Starmount Rams this season. On Friday night that theme continued as nine Ram backs combined for 476 yards on the ground in a 51-13 victory over conference foe Ashe County.

Mount Airy sacks West Stokes, 28-14

Darius Rucker rushed for two touchdowns in the first half, and Mount Airy’s defense forced two red-zone fumbles that led to touchdowns in the second half, helping the Granite Bears fend off West Stokes 28-14 in Friday’s Northwest 1A/2A opener for both schools.

For the first time this season, we don’t have any changes in our Elite Eight power rankings from one week to the next. Five of last week’s Elite Eight gridiron teams won their games, and the other three were idle.
