Basketball tournaments aplenty this week

They call it Christmas break, but the time around Christmas and New Year’s is hardly a holiday for Yadkin Valley area high school basketball teams.

Teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conference are spreading out across the region for holiday tournaments, even some of the JV squads. A handful, like the Starmount and Ashe County girls, played in tournaments before Christmas. The rest will be in action this week. Here is a rundown of what’s going on.

Because of the weekend snowstorm, be sure to check with each tournament site to confirm dates and times. We’ll post any schedule changes here at Yadkin Valley Sports and on our Facebook page if there are any. Coaches and school officials can report schedule changes to Eric Lusk at eric@yadkinvalleysports.com.

Community For Education Shootout

Surry Central and Surry Community College will serve as the host sites for this year’s event on Tuesday and Wednesday. The tournament is essentially set up as a round-robin between select Northwest 1A/2A and Mountain Valley 1A/2A boys and girls teams, though the North Wilkes boys are not participating this year because the Vikings are playing in the Frank Spencer tourney in Winston-Salem..

Action will start at 4 p.m. each day, with quadruple headers slated for each site.

The boys bracket will feature East Wilkes, North Stokes, Surry Central, West Wilkes, Mount Airy, Wilkes Central, East Surry and Chatham Central (which is taking the place of North Wilkes). The girls bracket will feature East Wilkes, North Stokes, North Wilkes, Surry Central, West Wilkes, Mount Airy, Wilkes Central and East Surry.

Intriguing match-ups will include Wilkes Central facing off against East Surry in a girls-boys doubleheader at Surry Community College starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. East Wilkes and East Surry teams will square off in the early games Wednesday (girls at 4 p.m., boys at 5:30) at Surry Central. East Wilkes girls coach Billy Brown served as an assistant for several years at East Surry before coming to Ronda, including a state championship season.

Wilkes Central and Surry Central will square off at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Surry Central in a rematch of the season opener for each squad.
