Top-seeded Ashe, North Surry advance to finals

Ashe County and North Surry were the class of their respective conferences in girls basketball this past regular season.

Ashe County's MacKinsey Johnson challenges a shot by Alleghany's Kennedy Gambill.

Both squads earned the chance on Wednesday night to play for conference tournament titles.

Ashe County beat Alleghany 59-41 in the semifinals of the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference tournament. North Surry dispatched of North Stokes 44-35 in the semifinals of the Northwest 1A/2A post-season tourney.

Ashe County (22-2) will play either Wilkes Central or East Wilkes in Friday night’s MVAC girls title game in West Jefferson (6:30 p.m. tipoff). North Surry will face Bishop McGuinness in the Northwest finale at West Stokes on Friday at 6 p.m.

Ashe swished nine three-pointers on Wednesday. Lizzie Hanes hit three from long range and finished with 17 points. Mallary Clay scored all 17 of her points in the first half — including a pair of three-pointers — as the Huskies opened up a 29-15 lead.

Alleghany managed just three points in the second period. Top scorer Kennedy Gambill was held to nine points for the night. Laken Blevins, who swished a trio of three-pointers, paced the Trojans with 12 points.

Like Ashe County, North Surry opened up a nice lead on North Stokes in the opening half. North Stokes cut a double-digit deficit down to six points in the fourth period but could draw no closer.

Kristina Rumplasch scored 16 points to lead North Surry, which is now 21-1 overall. Jodie Lemons of North Stokes led all scorers with 24 points.
