Another No. 1 seed bit the dust last night in the NCAA Tournament.

This time it was THE No. 1 seed — Ohio State, which was bestowed the honor of being the top overall team in this year’s bracket. The Buckeyes lost in the Sweet 16 to Kentucky. Unfortunately, Ohio State was the most popular pick to win this year’s national title, so that defeat certainly flattened a lot of brackets.
The UNC Tar Heels are still alive in the NCAA title hunt, though, and will face Kentucky in Sunday’s Elite Eight. The Heels are carrying the banner for the ACC, with Duke and Florida State getting bumped off this weekend.
Virginia Commonwealth? Remember back when Jay Bilas said the Rams didn’t belong in the tournament? Well, VCU has won four straight games and their coach, Shaka Smart, may have played himself into a nice contract at an ACC or SEC school for next year.
As for our Bracket Mania contest, Ike Trivette — who took over the lead after Thursday’s games — hangs on to the top spot after Friday, even though three of his Final Four teams have been knocked out (Ohio State and Duke being two of them). Contest player rabrinegar sits in second place, two points behind Ike. ACasstevens and kweatherman8 are tied for third place, just five points behind our leader.
Watch out for Rebel Good, a long-time publisher and journalist in Elkin and Surry County. He has been steadily climbing up the standings and has a bracket with three Final Four teams who are still alive (UNC, Kansas and UConn).
Yadkin Valley Sports publisher Eric Lusk has fallen way off the pace, but his mom — Kay Lusk — is tied for 12th with Eric’s former boss, Rebel Good. It’s a small world after all.
According to our calculations, only 35 of our 211 contest players remain in the running for a top-three finish. That includes our good friend, Ye Olde Coin Flipper, who picked Butler, Marquette, Arizona and Kansas in his Final Four. Arizona, Butler and Kansas are still dancing as of Saturday morning.
Of our 35 front-runners, 21 can still finish in first place.
Elite Eight games will be played Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday evening, our leader board should narrow even more. Be sure to check back each day to see how your bracket is doing.
