East Surry spikes Alleghany in 1A playoffs
SPARTA — Keri Fulp earned a volleyball double-double, and East Surry beat Alleghany 3-1 in the second round of the 1A state playoffs.
Fulp earned 21 kills and 10 blocks to help the Cardinals secure a 25-22, 25-21, 7-25 and 25-20 triumph. East Surry moves on to third-round play, where it will face conference rival North Stokes on the road Thursday. North Stokes swept West Wilkes 3-0 in Tuesday action.
Fulp also served up two aces in East Surry’s win. Lindsay Marinan added eight kills and seven digs. Katelyn Markle had four kills, 11 digs and two aces. Olivia Sheets set up the attack with 28 assists. She also had 11 digs.
“I thought our front line did a great job tonight putting pressure on Alleghany’s passers, and they did a great job blocking and getting touches on Alleghany’s hits,” East Surry coach Caleb Gilley said. “Our back row played great, making it easier for the front row to get good swings at the ball. With the exception of set three, I thought we played with a lot of energy. We just had a letdown in set three.”
While North Stokes is the higher seed from the Northwest 1A/2A Conference, East Surry is 2-1 against the Vikings in head-to-head meetings this season. North Stokes won the first match 3-0, but East Surry won the second 3-1 and beat the Vikings in the conference tournament semifinals 2-1.
