SPARTA — North Surry came out of the Christmas break in an unselfish mood and used great team basketball to down Galax (Va.) 58-47 on the opening day of the Alleghany Christmas tournament.
“We played the best in transition tonight that we have since the North Stokes game (on Dec. 16),” coach Shane Slate said. “We had four players with at least three assists. We finally passed the ball ahead to get some easy looks. That is something we have missed the last couple of games.”
Morgan Bunker led the Hounds with six assists, while Bailey Culler finished with four assists. Taylor Hill flirted with a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing eight boards. Johnson blocked three shots. Other North Surry scorers included Bunker 7, Maddison Hawks 3, Culler 3 and Kailen Hauser 2.
North Surry made 22 of 28 free throws for the game. Galax countered with seven three-point baskets. Bailey Shumate scored 19 points for Galax.
The Greyhounds improved to 10-0 and will play Elkin in Wednesday’s Alleghany tournament contest. Galax dropped to 7-5 with the loss.
