West Stokes’ George named principal of the year

West Stokes principal Tony George will be among those honored at the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 2012 annual meeting in Chapel Hill on Thursday. George will receive the Bob Deaton Principal of the Year award. The honor is named after a long-time principal, who worked primarily at Winston-Salem’s R.J. Reynolds High School and was president of the NCHSAA in 1977-78.

Starmount softball wins senior night game

Starmount senior pitcher Courtney Groce, the Rams’ main starter the past four years, won her final regular season game on the home diamond Friday evening. Groce pitched the first five innings of Starmount’s 4-2 victory against East Wilkes. She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out one. The Rams improved to 16-4 overall with the win.

Surry Central belts Bishop in baseball finale

A couple of days after signing with Surry Community College, Hunter Smith pitched Surry Central to a mercy rule baseball victory. The senior struck out 10 and allowed just three hits over five innings, helping the Golden Eagles beat Bishop McGuinness 10-0. Smith did not walk or hit a batter. Elkin wins final MVAC golf match of season

Elkin’s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta. The Buckin’ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.

Dillon Bray enjoyed his third solid outing in a row, and Starmount’s baseball team felled East Wilkes 10-1 on Friday night. Bray struck out 14 and allowed only three hits. He didn’t walk or hit any batters.

Northwest baseball tournament starts Tuesday

The Northwest 1A/2A Conference baseball regular season came to an end Friday night without much drama at the top of the standings. West Stokes beat Mount Airy 9-2, winning the conference with a three-game lead. The Wildcats finished 13-1 in Northwest play, losing only to North Surry.

Forbush pitcher nearly perfect in win at Alleghany

Travis Holden nearly threw a perfect game, and Forbush baseball returned to winning ways on Friday night. Holden didn’t allow a hit and struck out 10 in the Falcons’ 12-0 triumph. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

West Wilkes baseball fends off Elkin, 10-6

West Wilkes started hot and finished strong in a 10-6 Mountain Valley 1A/2a BASEBALL victory over visiting Elkin on Friday night. The Blackhawks scored four runs in their first at-bats, headlined by a two-run double from Charles Noble.

Soccer: West Wilkes beats Elkin in OT

Stephanie Sprinkle booted a penalty kick goal in overtime, and West Wilkes topped Elkin 3-2 in Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer action Friday night. The victory locks up the No. 1 seed for the Blackhawks for the upcoming Class 1A state playoffs. West Wilkes improved to 7-5-1 in MVAC play with three games left in the regular season.

Carter fans 12, South Stokes blanks Vikings

Senior Jordan Carter pitched a three-hit shutout, and South Stokes won its Senior Night game against North Stokes on Thursday, 5-0.

Browder, Evans race to top MVAC track honors

A sprinter from Forbush and a distance specialist from Wilkes Central won the top individual awards at Tuesday’s Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference track and field championships.

Elkin track all business en route to MVAC title

Elkin distance runners Zach Millsaps and Cuauhtli Lozada took assistant coach Dan Merritt by surprise when they boarded the bus to head over to Starmount for Tuesday’s conference track and field championship. Both runners donned long sleeve white dress shirts and blue ties over their track uniforms.

Roundup: Wilkes Central, Ashe battle to 1-1 tie

Wilkes Central’s girls soccer team didn’t win the game but likely sealed the conference championship anyways. The Eagles and Ashe County battled to a 1-1 tie in West Jefferson on Wednesday evening. Kebrina Keys scored for Ashe around the 24th minute. Wilkes Central’s goal came from Tori Andreski.

Stokes schools lead the Northwest track pack

Stokes County track and field teams surged on the second day of the Northwest 1A/2A Conference championships, held at North Stokes High. West Stokes, South Stokes and North Stokes swept the first three places respectively in the boys team standings, while North Stokes and South Stokes topped the leaderboard in the girls competition.
