Lucky 13: Elkin tennis tops Ashe, East Wilkes

It doesn’t look like anyone is going to catch Elkin’s boys tennis team in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference.

The Buckin’ Elks have nearly locked up another conference championship after wins against Ashe County (9-0) on Tuesday and East Wilkes (6-3) on Monday. The victories move the Elks to 13-0 overall — in full control of the MVAC race.

Elkin only surrendered four games in 12 sets of singles on Tuesday against Ashe County. Tyler Macy, Ryan Schell, Ashton Gant, David Bullin, Andrew Peterson and Coley McCulloch each picked up singles wins.

The Elks lost just four games in three doubles matches. Macy and Schell teamed up to win the first flight match 8-0. Gant and McCulloch won the second flight match 8-2. Bullin and Peterson cruised at No. 3 by an 8-0 score.

Elkin won the top four flights in singles and the top two doubles flights against East Wilkes. Macy, Schell, Jeremiah Morrison and Bullin gave the Elks a 4-2 lead after singles. Greylin Cleary and Alvin Sales picked up singles wins for East Wilkes.

Needing just one doubles triumph for the team win, the Elks got two. Macy and Schell won at No. 1 doubles, while Morrison and Bullin earned an icing win at No. 2. Cleary and Sales gave East Wilkes one more team point with a victory at No. 3 doubles.
