Elkin wins final MVAC golf match of season

Elkin’s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta.

The Buckin’ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.

While Zack Joines of Wilkes Central earned medalist honors, shooting a 39 on the tough course, Elkin put three of its scoring golfers in the top 10. Jacob Christian led the way with a 41. Jonathan Stroud and Austin Holloway both shot 43, Josiah Blevins 44, Noah Carter 49 and Cory Anderson 49.

Kirk Casstevens shot a 40 to lead Forbush. McKinley Johnson and Richard Wall of East Wilkes, as well as Hunter Kimbrell of Forbush, tied with Jacob Christian for third place with rounds of 41.

The conference tournament will be an 18-hole affair. It is scheduled to be played at Jefferson Landing in Ashe County on Monday, starting at 1 p.m.
