Storms force playoff postponements

Drenching rains and thunderstorms to start the week forced the postponement of a handful of state playoff baseball and softball games involving teams from the Yadkin Valley.

South Stokes baseball made it all the way to Wilkesboro yesterday evening before being told to turn around and head back to Walnut Cove. The Sauras’ second-round 1A state baseball playoff game at West Wilkes will be played tonight at 7 p.m. in Millers Creek.

The East Surry at West Wilkes softball contest also will be played tonight at 7 p.m.

Elkin at South Stanly baseball and Starmount at West Stokes softball also were postponed and will be played tonight. The Starmount-West Stokes contest, will start at 7 p.m. in King.

In games that were played Tuesday night, Surry Central lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to West Davidson in 2A action, while Wilkes Central beat Bandys 12-2. In the 1A playoffs, East Montgomery topped East Surry 5-2 and Swain beat North Wilkes 7-3.

Playoff soccer will continue tonight. West Stokes will host Piedmont at 6 p.m. in the 2A bracket. Bishop McGuinness will entertain Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy at 6 p.m. in a 1A contest.
