The Wilkes Diamonds 4th grade-under girls basketball team finished fourth in the YBOA state tournament in Mount Airy on May 11-13.
The 2012 Forbush Coed Basketball Camp will be held June 18-20 at the high school. Sessions for rising third- through fifth-graders will run from 8-11 a.m. Sessions for rising sixth- through ninth-graders will be from noon until 3 p.m.
The West Wilkes Lady Blackhawk Basketball Camp will be held June 4-7. The camp is open to players in grades 1-8. Sessions will run from 1-4 p.m. each day. The cost is $30.
The Westfield Booster Club is holding sign-ups for its summer basketball league until June 2. The league is for players in middle school and high school. The cost is $60 for one player or $45 for more than one player per family.
The Mount Airy girls basketball team will be holding its annual camp from June 18-21. This camp is being held to provide instruction for the fundamentals of basketball.
North Surry will hold its annual basketball camp June 11-14 for boys who are rising third- to ninth-graders. The camp consists of fundamental stations, skills contests and league games. The annual Cardinal Youth Basketball Camp will be held at East Wilkes High School on June 11-14. Sessions are open to boys in grades 3-8 (excludes rising high school freshmen) and will run from 8 a.m. until noon in the high school gym.
The second-annual Champion Skills Camp for basketball players will be held July 16-19 at Pilot Mountain Middle School. The four-day camp will be split into two sessions. The cost of the camp is $60 if paid by June 25 and $65 after June 25.
The 3rd Grade Surry Storm Black team won the YBOA state championship, held in Mount Airy this past weekend. The team finished the tournament undefeated.
The fourth-annual Risings Stars Starmount Basketball Camp will be held July 18-21. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. until noon each day at Starmount Middle School. Participants will receive daily instruction from coaches and players on fundamentals of the game.
Wilkes Central’s girls basketball team played for the 2A state championship on the final day of the winter sports season. The recently completed high school girls basketball season proved one of the most successful on record for the Yadkin Valley area. Bishop McGuinness won a state championship, its seventh in a row at the 1A level. Wilkes Central played for the 2A state title, falling to unbeaten Jordan-Matthews. North Surry and Mount Airy both won more than 20 games, with the Greyhounds advancing to the 2A West Regional semifinals and the Granite Bears nearly felling mighty Bishop McGuinness in an overtime contest.
The 8U Surry Storm Black girls basketball team competed in the 2012 Lady Gaters Classic in Greensboro on March 17-18. The Storm finished the tournament undefeated.
Congratulations to Benjamin Combs, gage vestal10 and Frank Miller. That trio finished 1-2-3 in our second annual Bracket Mania contest, picking up prize money for their efforts. Combs, a student-athlete at Starmount High School, had already wrapped up the top prize of $100 before the Kentucky-Kansas game even tipped off Monday night.
A trio of basketball guards from the Yadkin Valley has been invited to play in this summer’s N.C. East-West All-Star game in Greensboro. Wilkes Central’s Paige Love, Mount Airy’s Jordan Hiatt and North Surry’s Morgan Midkiff all led their teams to strong conference finishes and solid playoff runs this past winter.
