Charleston Southern softball junior Jana Matthews, a Starmount High graduate, was named Second-Team All-Big South Conference, it was announced Wednesday night during the league’s annual softball awards banquet.

Amber Wooten thought for awhile that her competitive volleyball career was going to end after her final game with the Starmount Rams last fall. She even told media members on the day the school celebrated her 1,000 career kills last October that, while being recruited by college programs, she had opted not to play at the next level.

Congratulations to Benjamin Combs, gage vestal10 and Frank Miller. That trio finished 1-2-3 in our second annual Bracket Mania contest, picking up prize money for their efforts. Combs, a student-athlete at Starmount High School, had already wrapped up the top prize of $100 before the Kentucky-Kansas game even tipped off Monday night.

A trio of basketball guards from the Yadkin Valley has been invited to play in this summer’s N.C. East-West All-Star game in Greensboro. Wilkes Central’s Paige Love, Mount Airy’s Jordan Hiatt and North Surry’s Morgan Midkiff all led their teams to strong conference finishes and solid playoff runs this past winter.

Victor Davila stood on the baseline, watching. Each time he moved, he resembled an older man instead of a strapping, young adult who turned 23 a week after the crack of the new year.
Surry Knights softball starting to surge

Surry Community College’s softball team, which began the season with 13 straight losses, is starting to get on a roll in the opposite direction. The Knights have won seven of their last 10 games, including sweeps of Ferrum College, Stanly Community College and Wake Tech over the past couple of weeks.

A pair of Mount Airy volleyball standouts will continue their careers at the collegiate level this fall, signing recently to join Surry Community College’s program. Alexis Allen and Jenna Clement inked with the Surry Knights for the 2012-13 school year. Allen is a hitter, while Clement is a setter. Both have been four-year contributors to Mount Airy High’s program.

Surry Community College’s softball team picked up four big wins over the weekend. The Knights beat Ferrum College 6-3 and 7-1 on the road last Thursday, then topped conference rival Stanly Community College 4-3 and 2-0 on Saturday.

We’ve lost our first No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament (Michigan State), and we’ve also seen our field of potential Bracket Mania winners narrowed even further. Coming out of Thursday night’s games, there are now 94 of our 411 pickers who are still in the running for a top three finish.
