Amber Wooten thought for awhile that her competitive volleyball career was going to end after her final game with the Starmount Rams last fall. She even told media members on the day the school celebrated her 1,000 career kills last October that, while being recruited by college programs, she had opted not to play at the next level.

A pair of Mount Airy volleyball standouts will continue their careers at the collegiate level this fall, signing recently to join Surry Community College’s program. Alexis Allen and Jenna Clement inked with the Surry Knights for the 2012-13 school year. Allen is a hitter, while Clement is a setter. Both have been four-year contributors to Mount Airy High’s program.

Jordan Raye collects more college volleyball honors

Catawba setter Jordan Raye, a graduate of Starmount High, has once again been named the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Specialist of the Week. Raye, a junior, had another great week for Catawba. She recorded a triple-double with 14 kills, 16 digs and 52 assists in the Indians’ victory over Newberry. Raye followed that up with 12 kills, seven digs and 36 assists in a sweep of Anderson. On the week, she hit at a .456 clip and committed no hitting errors.
Forbush alum earns NC State volleyball record

A Forbush High School graduate is now the all-time leader in digs for NC State’s volleyball program. Kelly Wood, now a senior at NCSU, set the new mark for career digs during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Georgia Tech. Wood had 16 digs in the match, giving her 1,769 for her career and breaking the old mark set by Jennifer Peterson from 1994-97.
Surry Knights win Region X volleyball tourney

Surry Community College rallied in dramatic fashion to capture the Region X championship over Pitt Community College, 3-2, on Sunday in the Region X/District P Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Knights took the first set 25-18 before dropping the next two sets by identical scores, 25-22. Surry then evened the match by taking the fourth set, 25-13. The Lady Knights started strong in the decisive fifth set and never trailed in taking down the Bulldogs, 15-12.
Surry Knights hosting Region X volleyball tourney

Surry Community College will host the Region X volleyball tournament this weekend. The tournament will consist of seven North Carolina community colleges along with Pasco-Hernando Community College from Florida. Former Starmount volleyball standout Jordan Raye has been named the Specialist of the Week in the South Atlantic Conference. Raye, who now plays for Catawba, helped the Indians to a pair of wins that kept the school tied for the No. 2 spot in the conference standings.
