Elkin Mighty Mites registration on May 21

Registration for the first season of Elkin Mighty Mites football and cheerleading will be held Monday, May 21 from 6-8 p.m. in the gym at the Elkin Recreation Center. The football and cheerleading program is for rising first- and second-graders.

‘Heal The Hurt’ combine to benefit injured player

The first Heal The Hurt Football Combine will be held Saturday, June 2 at Starmount High School. The rain date is June 9. The cost is $10 per athlete, and all money raised will go to the medical needs of Starmount student-athlete Christian Hurt, who suffered a serious neck injury in a football playoff game last November and is awaiting a special surgery.

Starmount Middle football holding sign-ups

Starmount Middle Football registration will be Sunday, May 20th and Sunday, June 3rd from 2-4 p.m. in the gym lobby. Registration will cost $50. For more information, call Starmount Middle at (336) 468-6833.

Realignment approved, football season extended

It’s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.

Golf tournament will benefit Starmount Middle football

A golf tournament to benefit Starmount Middle School’s football program will be held Saturday, April 21 at Silo Run. The format is four-person captain’s choice. The cost is $200 per team. Prizes will be available for the top finishers — $400 for first place and $200 for second place. Additional contests include longest drive and closest to the pin.

Ashe likely to name Hampton its new football coach

Ashe County will name North Surry’s Brian Hampton as its new head football coach on Tuesday afternoon, several sources are reporting. Hampton’s hiring is pending school board approval this evening. Hampton has been the head coach at North Surry the past three seasons, leading the Greyhounds to seven wins in 2011 and eight in 2010. He lives in Ashe County and has been making the long trip up and down the mountain since taking the North Surry post.

Mount Airy, East Surry realignment appeals denied

East Surry and Mount Airy made their case Thursday that the N.C. High School Athletic Association got it wrong when putting the two schools in a conference with four Forsyth County partners and North Stokes for the 2013-17 alignment period.

North Surry’s Draughn inks with Campbell

Campbell University restarted its football program a few years ago, and already the Fighting Camels have mined Surry, Yadkin and Stokes counties for recruits. North Surry senior Daniel Draughn became the latest from the area to sign with the private school from Buies Creek, which competes in a non-scholarship NCAA Division I Conference.

East Surry, Mount Airy to file conference realignment appeals

East Surry and Mount Airy high schools aren’t happy with where the N.C. High School Athletic Association has placed them for the 2013-17 conference alignment period, and the two schools have filed appeals and requested changes. Under the latest conference alignment draft released by the NCHSAA a few weeks ago, the Cardinals and Granite Bears are slated to move to an all-1A conference that includes North Stokes, Atkins, Winston-Salem Prep, Bishop McGuinness and Walkertown.

West Stokes state championship meet-and-greet

East Coast Wings in King will host a meet-and-greet and autograph/memorabilia signing party on Sunday afternoon with members of West Stokes High School’s state championship football team. Wildcat players and coaches will be available from 2-5 p.m. West Stokes enjoyed its best football season in school history last fall, finishing 16-0 and beating Kinston in the 2AA state title game.

A special edition of Foothills Football magazine, devoted exclusively to the 2011 state champion West Stokes Wildcats, is now for sale. The full-color, glossy publication is 68 pages, filled with stories, photos, notes, quotes, stats and numbers from the Wildcats’ 16-0 season. West Stokes beat Kinston 21-14 on Dec. 3 in the 2AA state championship game – the first state title in school history and the first football state crown in Stokes County history.

West Stokes’ Bullard commits to Charlotte 49ers

West Stokes senior Tyler Bullard, the defensive MVP of the 2AA state championship game, will help UNC Charlotte pioneer its return to college football, the team’s Web site is reporting.
