Starmount softball coach steps down

Heather Courts, who has led Starmount High’s softball program the past 13 years, has stepped down from her post. She plans to stay at the school and serve as a teacher and assistant athletics director.

Forbush hosting co-ed summer basketball camp

The 2012 Forbush Coed Basketball Camp will be held June 18-20 at the high school. Sessions for rising third- through fifth-graders will run from 8-11 a.m. Sessions for rising sixth- through ninth-graders will be from noon until 3 p.m.

West Wilkes Lady Blackhawks summer hoops camp

The West Wilkes Lady Blackhawk Basketball Camp will be held June 4-7. The camp is open to players in grades 1-8. Sessions will run from 1-4 p.m. each day. The cost is $30.

Sign-up now for Westfield summer hooops league

The Westfield Booster Club is holding sign-ups for its summer basketball league until June 2. The league is for players in middle school and high school. The cost is $60 for one player or $45 for more than one player per family.

Mount Airy girls hoops camp coming June 18-21

The Mount Airy girls basketball team will be holding its annual camp from June 18-21. This camp is being held to provide instruction for the fundamentals of basketball.

Elkin Mighty Mites registration on May 21

Registration for the first season of Elkin Mighty Mites football and cheerleading will be held Monday, May 21 from 6-8 p.m. in the gym at the Elkin Recreation Center. The football and cheerleading program is for rising first- and second-graders.

North Surry youth hoops camp coming June 11-14

North Surry will hold its annual basketball camp June 11-14 for boys who are rising third- to ninth-graders. The camp consists of fundamental stations, skills contests and league games. No ‘senioritis’ for West Stokes softball team

West Stokes softball coach Rick McHone was a bit concerned about his team’s focus heading into Friday night’s playoff home game against Piedmont. Saturday is graduation day for the school, and standout seniors Brianna Bratcher and Emily Worley spent much of Friday afternoon going through rehearsals for the big event on the football field.

East Wilkes holding summer baseball camp

The annual East Wilkes summer baseball camp will be held June 4-6 from 8 a.m. until noon at the high school baseball field. The camp is open to grades 3-8. Basic fundamentals and skills of baseball will be taught — throwing, pitching, hitting, fielding and base-running. There will be daily competitions for East Wilkes baseball prizes.

‘Heal The Hurt’ combine to benefit injured player

The first Heal The Hurt Football Combine will be held Saturday, June 2 at Starmount High School. The rain date is June 9. The cost is $10 per athlete, and all money raised will go to the medical needs of Starmount student-athlete Christian Hurt, who suffered a serious neck injury in a football playoff game last November and is awaiting a special surgery.

West Wilkes overcomes East Surry hurdle at last

West Wilkes was trailing East Surry 5-0 in Wednesday’s second-round state playoff contest when a sporadic downpour began. As the rain fell harder, so did the Hawks’ hits, and a rainbow over the West Wilkes campus seemed to promise a comeback just as play was halted due to lightning.

Just a few teams left in state playoffs

There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.

Wilkes Central’s Baker named soccer MVP

Wilkes Central, the regular season champions of Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer, swept the conference’s top awards. Senior midfielder Risa Baker was voted the league’s Player of the Year. Uwe Ehrlich was voted the Coach of the Year.

Starmount Middle football holding sign-ups
