High school sports playoff scoreboard

Just a few teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences remain in the state playoffs. Here are scores from weekend playoff games in baseball, softball and girls soccer:

East Wilkes holding summer baseball camp

The annual East Wilkes summer baseball camp will be held June 4-6 from 8 a.m. until noon at the high school baseball field. The camp is open to grades 3-8. Basic fundamentals and skills of baseball will be taught — throwing, pitching, hitting, fielding and base-running. There will be daily competitions for East Wilkes baseball prizes.

Just a few teams left in state playoffs

There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.

West Wilkes baseball team only managed five hits but got RBIs from five different players in a 5-2 second-round state playoff victory over South Stokes on Wednesday in Millers Creek.

Storms force playoff postponements

Drenching rains and thunderstorms to start the week forced the postponement of a handful of state playoff baseball and softball games involving teams from the Yadkin Valley.

Wilkes Central carries big sticks against Bandys

Bandys just couldn’t get Wilkes Central’s Jordan Carlton out Tuesday night. And even when Carlton left the bat on his shoulder, it proved to hurt the Trojans, who lost 12-2 to Carlton’s Eagles in a second-round state playoff baseball matchup.

Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.

Strong pitching, early runs key East Surry triumph

East Surry baseball coach Barry Hall had some fresh arms getting loose in the bullpen in the late innings. In the end, he didn’t need them. Jordan Miller pitched his first complete game of the season, and the Cardinals eliminated Chatham Central from the 1A state playoffs by a 4-1 score Friday night.

Baseball state playoff brackets announced

Seven baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and five from the Northwest 1A/2A made the state playoffs. The N.C. High School Athletic Association released the brackets Wednesday morning.

Starmount and Wilkes Central played for the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference baseball tournament championship on Monday night. The Rams won the game 4-1. The Northwest 1A/2A Conference released its all-conference teams for spring sports on Tuesday. Here is the complete list for baseball, softball, boys tennis, golf, girls soccer and track & field

South Stokes wins wild Northwest baseball finale

South Stokes exploded for six runs in its final at-bats, then hung on for an 11-9 victory against West Stokes in the Northwest 1A/2A Conference baseball tournament championship on Monday. The Sauras became only the second conference team to beat the regular season champion Wildcats, avenging two earlier losses. Jacob Williams, who had two hits, scored two runs and batted home a run in the title game, was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

Starmount captures MVAC tourney crown

Starmount’s baseball team came into the 2012 season as the favorite to win the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. In a vote of league coaches for Yadkin Valley Sports’ spring preview magazine, the Rams edged Wilkes Central as the team to beat. Surging Starmount fells Forbush in semifinals

After watching his team beat Starmount 13-1 back in March, Forbush baseball coach Taylor Rutledge cautioned players on reading too much into the lopsided victory margin. “Those guys just always peak toward the end,” Rutledge said at the time. “Sort of like last year when they peaked (late). They went further than us in the playoffs and further than Wilkes Central in the playoffs … If you’re going to get them, you better get them early. I don’t look for this year to be any different.”
