McKinley Johnson of East Wilkes enjoyed a comfortable victory in Monday’s Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf championships, played at Jefferson Landing in Ashe County.
Elkin’s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta. The Buckin’ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.
The Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf schedule weaved its way through Wilkes County on Thursday, with teams playing a couple of nine-hole matches at Oakwoods Golf Club in North Wilkesboro.
McKinley Johnson of East Wilkes earned medalist honors, and Elkin captured team honors in the latest Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf match, played Monday at Mountain Aire in Jefferson County. Johnson carded a 36 to win the day, edging Ashe County’s David Monroe by one stroke. Elkin’s Josiah Blevins and Wilkes Central’s Zack Joines both finished with a 38.
East Wilkes and Elkin co-hosted Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf matches at Cedarbrook Country Club on Thursday. The Cardinals and Elks made the most of home-course-advantage, with each winning a nine-hole round. East Wilkes won the first nine-hole set by one stroke over Starmount. Forbush was third and Elkin was fourth.
If the first Mountain Valley 1A/2A golf match of the season is any indication, the battle to be conference champion looks up for grabs among several teams. Only five strokes separated the top six teams during the league’s first nine-hole match Thursday afternoon at Silo Run. The second nine-hole round later in the day had much more disparity – with 22 strokes separating first from sixth – but different teams topped the leaderboard.
