Heather Courts, who has led Starmount High’s softball program the past 13 years, has stepped down from her post. She plans to stay at the school and serve as a teacher and assistant athletics director.
Just a few teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences remain in the state playoffs. Here are scores from weekend playoff games in baseball, softball and girls soccer:
West Stokes softball coach Rick McHone was a bit concerned about his team’s focus heading into Friday night’s playoff home game against Piedmont. Saturday is graduation day for the school, and standout seniors Brianna Bratcher and Emily Worley spent much of Friday afternoon going through rehearsals for the big event on the football field.
West Wilkes was trailing East Surry 5-0 in Wednesday’s second-round state playoff contest when a sporadic downpour began. As the rain fell harder, so did the Hawks’ hits, and a rainbow over the West Wilkes campus seemed to promise a comeback just as play was halted due to lightning.
There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.
West Stokes erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and rallied for a 9-3 state playoff softball win over Starmount on Wednesday in a battle of top seeds from the area.
Lightning forced another postponement in the East Surry at West Wilkes playoff softball showdown. The Cardinals and Blackhawks were in the fourth inning Wednesday night when lightning halted the action. The game did not continue.
East Surry used opportunistic base-running and stout defense to overcome a sluggish night at the plate Friday in the opening round of the 1A softball playoffs.

The defending 1A state champion East Surry Cardinals will begin their softball title defense by hosting Alleghany later this week.
The Northwest 1A/2A Conference released its all-conference teams for spring sports on Tuesday. Here is the complete list for baseball, softball, boys tennis, golf, girls soccer and track & field
The 2012 Mountain Valley Conference softball tournament was identical to last season’s in almost every way, right down to which teams faced off in each round. Even the score of the championship game was one point away from being a repeat. But there was one major difference.
Forbush had to draw its conference tournament seeding out of a hat earlier this week. But the Lady Falcons have left nothing to chance since hitting the field for the final week of Mountain Valley 1A/2A action. Coach Rachel Davis’ team followed up Wednesday’s 2-0 win over North Wilkes with a 4-3 semifinal victory against county rival Starmount on Friday afternoon.
Leaving the bases loaded twice and stranding runners at second and third in two other innings might frustrate some coaches. Not West Wilkes’ softball skipper Michael Woodruff.
Alleghany’s softball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and beat North Wilkes 4-1 in a special state playoff seeding game Thursday at West Wilkes High.
