Tanner Mathis threw a one-hitter, and Starmount’s baseball beat Alleghany 11-0 in a make-up Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference game Wednesday. The Rams scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to bring the 10-run mercy rule into play.
Elkin’s boys tennis team, which has been holding steady at No. 4 in the state 1A rankings the past few weeks, polished off its 11th-straight win on Tuesday afternoon. The Buckin’ Elks beat Starmount 9-0.
Elkin’s boys tennis team survived its stiffest challenge of the season Thursday afternoon, defeating Wilkes Central 6-3 at home. Three of six singles matches went to third-set tiebreakers, with the Elks taking two of those duels – including a 14-12 tiebreaker won by Andrew Peterson at No. 6 singles.

East Wilkes completed a season sweep of Forbush in boys tennis Thursday afternoon, topping the Falcons 9-0 at home.
East Wilkes’ boys tennis team has already picked up a couple of wins this week, beating North Surry 7-2 on Monday and then topping Alleghany 6-0 on Tuesday.

Elkin High’s boys tennis program has produced a strong and talented team over the past few years. From the looks of the team that took the courts during the first two weeks of the 2012 season, this spring should be no different.
After three frustrating losses to start the season, Surry Central’s softball team finally unleashed. The Golden Eagles pounded out a 13-0 win over North Surry on Tuesday night at home. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
