The high jump has been good to West Wilkes’ Makayla Roten this year. The junior won an indoor state title in the event back in February, then earned an outdoor 1A Midwest Region championship on May 5 at North Stokes. On Saturday at N.C. A&T University’s Belk Track, Roten added an outdoor state title in the high jump to her collection.
Elkin’s Zach Millsaps completed his final strides in the 800 meters Saturday afternoon at the 1A state track championships, all of his competitors safely in the rearview mirror and his first state title locked up. Then he kept running.

A group of conference champions from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A earned bigger prizes Saturday at the 2A Midwest Regional meet at Cuthbertson High School. Laney Browder of Wilkes Central – the MVAC’s female track MVP — earned region gold in both the 800 and 1,600 meters. Casey Evans of Forbush – the league’s male track MVP – placed first in the 100 meters and came within a whisker of winning the 400 meters.
Senior Zach Millsaps won three gold medals, and Elkin’s boys track team finished third overall in the 1A Midwest Region track and field championships, held Saturday at North Stokes High School. Millsaps crossed first in his signature event, the 800 meters, and won a rainy 3,200 meters.
A sprinter from Forbush and a distance specialist from Wilkes Central won the top individual awards at Tuesday’s Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference track and field championships.
Elkin distance runners Zach Millsaps and Cuauhtli Lozada took assistant coach Dan Merritt by surprise when they boarded the bus to head over to Starmount for Tuesday’s conference track and field championship. Both runners donned long sleeve white dress shirts and blue ties over their track uniforms.
