Wilkes Central’s Baker named soccer MVP

Wilkes Central, the regular season champions of Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer, swept the conference’s top awards. Senior midfielder Risa Baker was voted the league’s Player of the Year. Uwe Ehrlich was voted the Coach of the Year.

Seven baseball teams march on in state playoffs

Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.

NCHSAA unveils state softball playoff brackets

The defending 1A state champion East Surry Cardinals will begin their softball title defense by hosting Alleghany later this week.

Elkin runners shine in 1A region meet

Senior Zach Millsaps won three gold medals, and Elkin’s boys track team finished third overall in the 1A Midwest Region track and field championships, held Saturday at North Stokes High School. Millsaps crossed first in his signature event, the 800 meters, and won a rainy 3,200 meters.

Alleghany tops North Wilkes in softball qualifier

Alleghany’s softball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and beat North Wilkes 4-1 in a special state playoff seeding game Thursday at West Wilkes High.

Forbush, Starmount advance to softball semis

Just like last season, the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference softball tournament is shaping up to be a Wilkes County vs. Yadkin County bragging rights showdown. On one side of the bracket, regular season champion West Wilkes and Wilkes Central will compete for the right to play in Monday’s championship game. On the other side, Starmount and Forbush will duke it out.

Starmount blasts pasts Alleghany

It didn’t take long for Starmount’s baseball team to bounce back from Tuesday night’s stunning loss at North Wilkes. The Rams rebounded with a vengeance Wednesday night in the opening round of the Mountain Valley 1A/2A tournament, pounding Alleghany 12-2 in six innings.

Realignment approved, football season extended

It’s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.

MVAC announces softball, baseball tourney brackets

The Mountain Valley 1A/2A baseball and softball tournaments will start tonight (Wednesday) with quarterfinal games in both events. The higher seeded teams will host games in this round. The semifinals of the MVAC baseball tournament will be played Thursday at Elkin High, with the championship coming Monday at Elkin.

Elkin wins final MVAC golf match of season

Elkin’s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta. The Buckin’ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.

Bray delivers another impressive ‘W’ for Rams

Dillon Bray enjoyed his third solid outing in a row, and Starmount’s baseball team felled East Wilkes 10-1 on Friday night. Bray struck out 14 and allowed only three hits. He didn’t walk or hit any batters.
