Wilkes Central, the regular season champions of Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer, swept the conferenceâ€™s top awards. Senior midfielder Risa Baker was voted the leagueâ€™s Player of the Year. Uwe Ehrlich was voted the Coach of the Year.
Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.

Starmount sophomore Hunter Welborn won a Class 2A state championship today in the high jump. Welborn cleared the bar at 5 feet, 6 inches in the 2A state meet, held at N.C. A&T University in Greensboro.
Elkinâ€™s girls soccer team may have taken some lumps in the ultra-tough Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference during the regular season, but the strong competition certainly got the Elks ready for the state playoffs.
Forbush Highâ€™s girls soccer team scored five unanswered goals â€“ including three in overtime â€“ to upset Randleman 5-2 in Tuesdayâ€™s state playoff opener. Jessica Tucker, Sheridan Caudle and DeAnna Wilkins netted shots within three minutes of each other in extra time to lift the Falcons. Forbush was the No. 3 seed from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. Randleman was the champion of the Pac-6.
Elkin, Wilkes Central, West Wilkes, West Stokes and Bishop McGuinness will enjoy first-round home games as the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls soccer state playoffs start this week.
A group of conference champions from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A earned bigger prizes Saturday at the 2A Midwest Regional meet at Cuthbertson High School. Laney Browder of Wilkes Central â€“ the MVACâ€™s female track MVP — earned region gold in both the 800 and 1,600 meters. Casey Evans of Forbush â€“ the leagueâ€™s male track MVP â€“ placed first in the 100 meters and came within a whisker of winning the 400 meters.
Charles Noble hit two home runs and recorded six RBIs, helping West Wilkes power its way into the Mountain Valley 1A/2A tournament semifinals. The Blackhawks beat Elkin 11-1 on Wednesday night. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Itâ€™s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.
The Mountain Valley 1A/2A baseball and softball tournaments will start tonight (Wednesday) with quarterfinal games in both events. The higher seeded teams will host games in this round. The semifinals of the MVAC baseball tournament will be played Thursday at Elkin High, with the championship coming Monday at Elkin.

Elkinâ€™s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta. The Buckinâ€™ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.
