Senior William Whitacre of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness fired a brilliant five-under par 67 to take a four-shot lead after Monday’s first day of the 15th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1A men’s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.

Elkin’s boys tennis team pushed the defending 1A state champions to the limit Thursday afternoon before falling 5-2 to Bishop McGuinness in a second-round dual-team playoff match-up.
Forbush soccer surges past Randleman in OT

Forbush High’s girls soccer team scored five unanswered goals – including three in overtime – to upset Randleman 5-2 in Tuesday’s state playoff opener. Jessica Tucker, Sheridan Caudle and DeAnna Wilkins netted shots within three minutes of each other in extra time to lift the Falcons. Forbush was the No. 3 seed from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. Randleman was the champion of the Pac-6.

Mount Airy tennis players win region titles

A Mount Airy singles player and doubles team won 1A West Regional honors over the weekend in Hendersonville. Matt Kessler captured the 1A West singles crown, defeating Hendersonville’s Jacob Fuquay in the championship. Kessler rallied after dropping the opening set 6-3 to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2.

Elkin runners shine in 1A region meet

Senior Zach Millsaps won three gold medals, and Elkin’s boys track team finished third overall in the 1A Midwest Region track and field championships, held Saturday at North Stokes High School. Millsaps crossed first in his signature event, the 800 meters, and won a rainy 3,200 meters.
Bishop McGuinness will remain in NCHSAA

Bishop McGuinness and other parochial schools like Cardinal Gibbons and Charlotte Catholic will remain in the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The NCHSAA announced Thursday that a vote to change the association’s bylaws and kick the private parochial schools out has failed. A total of 293 votes (75 percent of the membership) was needed to ban the private schools from the association.
Realignment approved, football season extended
It’s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.
East Surry, West Stokes advance in NW tourney

If you happened by the Elkin municipal tennis courts after 5 p.m. Tuesday looking for a playoff match between two of the state’s top-ranked high school teams, you were out of luck. No, they didn’t move the match to another day. And no, storms in the area didn’t wash it out.
