Elkin runners shine in 1A region meet

Senior Zach Millsaps won three gold medals, and Elkin’s boys track team finished third overall in the 1A Midwest Region track and field championships, held Saturday at North Stokes High School. Millsaps crossed first in his signature event, the 800 meters, and won a rainy 3,200 meters.

West Wilkes cruises past Elks, into MVAC semis

Charles Noble hit two home runs and recorded six RBIs, helping West Wilkes power its way into the Mountain Valley 1A/2A tournament semifinals. The Blackhawks beat Elkin 11-1 on Wednesday night. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Realignment approved, football season extended

It’s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.

MVAC announces softball, baseball tourney brackets

The Mountain Valley 1A/2A baseball and softball tournaments will start tonight (Wednesday) with quarterfinal games in both events. The higher seeded teams will host games in this round. The semifinals of the MVAC baseball tournament will be played Thursday at Elkin High, with the championship coming Monday at Elkin.

Elkin cruises past first tennis playoff foe

If you happened by the Elkin municipal tennis courts after 5 p.m. Tuesday looking for a playoff match between two of the state’s top-ranked high school teams, you were out of luck. No, they didn’t move the match to another day. And no, storms in the area didn’t wash it out.

Elkin wins final MVAC golf match of season

Elkin’s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta. The Buckin’ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.

Dillon Bray enjoyed his third solid outing in a row, and Starmount’s baseball team felled East Wilkes 10-1 on Friday night. Bray struck out 14 and allowed only three hits. He didn’t walk or hit any batters.

West Wilkes baseball fends off Elkin, 10-6

West Wilkes started hot and finished strong in a 10-6 Mountain Valley 1A/2a BASEBALL victory over visiting Elkin on Friday night. The Blackhawks scored four runs in their first at-bats, headlined by a two-run double from Charles Noble.

Soccer: West Wilkes beats Elkin in OT

Stephanie Sprinkle booted a penalty kick goal in overtime, and West Wilkes topped Elkin 3-2 in Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer action Friday night. The victory locks up the No. 1 seed for the Blackhawks for the upcoming Class 1A state playoffs. West Wilkes improved to 7-5-1 in MVAC play with three games left in the regular season.

Browder, Evans race to top MVAC track honors

A sprinter from Forbush and a distance specialist from Wilkes Central won the top individual awards at Tuesday’s Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference track and field championships.
