Elkin track all business en route to MVAC title

Elkin distance runners Zach Millsaps and Cuauhtli Lozada took assistant coach Dan Merritt by surprise when they boarded the bus to head over to Starmount for Tuesday’s conference track and field championship. Both runners donned long sleeve white dress shirts and blue ties over their track uniforms.

Roundup: Wilkes Central, Ashe battle to 1-1 tie

Wilkes Central’s girls soccer team didn’t win the game but likely sealed the conference championship anyways. The Eagles and Ashe County battled to a 1-1 tie in West Jefferson on Wednesday evening. Kebrina Keys scored for Ashe around the 24th minute. Wilkes Central’s goal came from Tori Andreski.

Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference boys tennis players competed for singles and doubles championships Tuesday in Elkin. Elks, Eagles dominate MVAC tennis tourney

Elkin and Wilkes Central tennis players dominated the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference tournament, held Tuesday at the Elkin municipal courts. The 1A singles final was an all-Buckin’ Elks affair, with Tyler Macy defeating teammate Ryan Schell 6-1, 6-0. Elkin’s Jeremiah Morrison and David Bullin captured the 1A doubles crown, beating Christopher Shew and Luke Sealey in a competitive match, 7-5, 6-4.

Redemption: Elkin baseball stuns Forbush 5-3

Elkin’s Houston Parks didn’t even get an out the first time he pitched against Forbush on March 28. He faced five batters, walking four and allowing a hit, before getting pulled. The Buckin’ Elks went on to lose the game 17-0 on their home field – their most lopsided defeat of the season.

Forbush softball blanks Elkin, 8-0

Kayla Smith and Kelly Moran came up with timely hits, and Forbush High’s softball team returned to the win column Tuesday with an 8-0 triumph against Elkin. The Falcons suffered a 7-6 loss the night before to Glenn in non-conference action.

Forbush soccer wins first game on new field

Forbush christened its new soccer complex with a 4-1 win against visiting Elkin on Monday evening. The Falcons notched four unanswered goals after Elkin senior Mary Tayloe scored early in the first half. The first of the four goals may have been the most crucial. Elkin seemed poised to carry a 1-0 lead into intermission before Natalie York found the back of the net for Forbush with about five minutes left.

Wilkes Central, Forbush win MVAC golf matches

The Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf schedule weaved its way through Wilkes County on Thursday, with teams playing a couple of nine-hole matches at Oakwoods Golf Club in North Wilkesboro.

Rain and storms canceled or postponed another round of sports action around the Yadkin Valley. A few games beat the weather. Some games started and didn’t finish. Others never got under way. One in particular featuring baseball teams from West Stokes and North Surry were halted at a pivotal point – tied 8-8 in the top of the ninth inning.

Elkin wins latest MVAC golf match

McKinley Johnson of East Wilkes earned medalist honors, and Elkin captured team honors in the latest Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf match, played Monday at Mountain Aire in Jefferson County. Johnson carded a 36 to win the day, edging Ashe County’s David Monroe by one stroke. Elkin’s Josiah Blevins and Wilkes Central’s Zack Joines both finished with a 38.

Rams picking up steam on baseball diamond

Starmount coach Mike McCann smiled as he showed off the grass and dirt stains on his baseball pants. The streaks of the sport’s finest colors came courtesy of a post-game slide into a team huddle after the Rams’ 10-0 win at Elkin on Friday night.
