Elkin distance runners Zach Millsaps and Cuauhtli Lozada took assistant coach Dan Merritt by surprise when they boarded the bus to head over to Starmount for Tuesday’s conference track and field championship. Both runners donned long sleeve white dress shirts and blue ties over their track uniforms.
Wilkes Central’s girls soccer team didn’t win the game but likely sealed the conference championship anyways. The Eagles and Ashe County battled to a 1-1 tie in West Jefferson on Wednesday evening. Kebrina Keys scored for Ashe around the 24th minute. Wilkes Central’s goal came from Tori Andreski.

Rain and storms canceled or postponed another round of sports action around the Yadkin Valley. A few games beat the weather. Some games started and didn’t finish. Others never got under way. One in particular featuring baseball teams from West Stokes and North Surry were halted at a pivotal point – tied 8-8 in the top of the ninth inning.
McKinley Johnson of East Wilkes earned medalist honors, and Elkin captured team honors in the latest Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf match, played Monday at Mountain Aire in Jefferson County. Johnson carded a 36 to win the day, edging Ashe County’s David Monroe by one stroke. Elkin’s Josiah Blevins and Wilkes Central’s Zack Joines both finished with a 38.
