Mountain Valley names all-conference football team

Wilkes Central’s Dustin Triplett, Ashe County’s Josh Wineberg and Starmount’s Scott Johnson earned the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference’s top football awards. The conference’s awards team was released Monday. Triplett was voted the league’s offensive player of the year. The senior rushed for more than 1,500 yards this season, helping the Eagles win 10 games for the second consecutive season.

West Wilkes rebounds with 16-4 triumph at Elkin

West Wilkes baseball coach Ben Wellborn described last Friday’s surprising — and costly — loss at Ashe County as “one of those nights where we were really off.” Elkin coaches and players now know that feeling. The Buckin’ Elks suffered through one of their worst performances of the season Monday night, losing to West Wilkes 16-4 in the opening round of the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference tournament.

MVAC baseball tourney pairings announced

After a competitive regular season, the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference tournament brackets have finally been set. It took until the final night of the regular season to settle all of the seedings.

Forbush aces latest MVAC golf match, edges Elkin

McKinley Johnson of East Wilkes earned individual medalist honors, and Forbush took the team victory in the latest Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf match Monday afternoon. Johnson carded a 34 at Mountain Aire Golf Club in West Jefferson, edging Zach Joines of Wilkes Central by one stroke. Forbush won the team duel by three strokes over Elkin.

Forbush, Elkin golf teams win MVAC matches

Wilkes Central’s Kiel Zaleski collected medalist honors, and Forbush earned a comfortable team victory in the latest Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf match, held Tuesday at Greenstreet Mountain Golf Club.

The Mountain Valley 1A/2A has announced its all-conference basketball teams. Forbush senior Michael Scott and Starmount senior Kelli Bonner were voted MVAC players of the year. Starmount boys coach Jeffery Hague and Ashe County girls coach Laura Foster earned coach of the year status.
