Conference baseball races reach halfway point

The Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences reached the halfway point of their baseball schedules Tuesday night. Wilkes Central grabbed a one-game lead over Forbush in the MVAC with a 10-5 win in East Bend, while West Stokes has forged a one-game edge over Bishop McGuinness in the Northwest.

Forbush nipped by Ashe in MVAC semifinals

For the second time in less than a week, Forbush High’s boys basketball team had the chance to win a game with a buzzer-beater. Only this time, the shot wouldn’t go down.

Whether you were in a gym in Ronda, Moravian Falls, East Bend or Elkin last night, you likely found yourself itching to know scores from the other locales hosting Mountain Valley 1A/2A prep basketball games. It was a big night for the conference, both in boys and girls action, and brought a lot of things into focus with just five games left on the MVAC schedule.

Conference basketball standings: Feb. 7

The stretch run is here for the high school basketball regular season. A last flurry of games this week will decide conference titles and settle seeding for upcoming conference tournaments and state playoffs. Big splash: Elkin wins conference swim titles

For the first time in program history, Elkin High’s boys and girls swim teams claimed conference championships in the same year. The Buckin’ Elks earned the sweep on Saturday in Pilot Mountain, winning both the boys and girls Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference trophies.

Forbush soccer nearing perfect MVAC season

Forbush High’s soccer team needs just one more win to complete a perfect conference season. The Falcons beat Ashe County 3-0 on Tuesday night to improve to 15-0 in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A standings.

We’ve reached the mid-point of the high school football season. Six weeks in the books, six more weeks to be played. With regards to our weekly Elite Eight power rankings, no one is where they started at the beginning of the season. Go figure.

Starmount spikers edged by visiting Carson

Volleyball players from Starmount and Carson high schools did their best to spike cancer Wednesday evening in the Rams’ annual Cure For Cancer match. The two stellar teams also treated fans to one heck of a duel.

Another quick start keys Elkin victory

Elkin’s strong defense was the story once again Friday night at Ashe County, forcing four turnovers in a 28-7 rout of the Huskies.
