Just a few teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences remain in the state playoffs. Here are scores from weekend playoff games in baseball, softball and girls soccer:
West Wilkes was trailing East Surry 5-0 in Wednesday’s second-round state playoff contest when a sporadic downpour began. As the rain fell harder, so did the Hawks’ hits, and a rainbow over the West Wilkes campus seemed to promise a comeback just as play was halted due to lightning.
There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.
Lightning forced another postponement in the East Surry at West Wilkes playoff softball showdown. The Cardinals and Blackhawks were in the fourth inning Wednesday night when lightning halted the action. The game did not continue.
Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.
Mount Airy sophomore Kirsten Parries may have picked up some new nicknames at Saturday’s 1A state track and field championships in Greensboro. The Comeback Kid. Or maybe Kickin’ Kirsten.

The defending 1A state champion East Surry Cardinals will begin their softball title defense by hosting Alleghany later this week.
The Northwest 1A/2A Conference released its all-conference teams for spring sports on Tuesday. Here is the complete list for baseball, softball, boys tennis, golf, girls soccer and track & field
Senior Zach Millsaps won three gold medals, and Elkin’s boys track team finished third overall in the 1A Midwest Region track and field championships, held Saturday at North Stokes High School. Millsaps crossed first in his signature event, the 800 meters, and won a rainy 3,200 meters.
Bishop McGuinness and other parochial schools like Cardinal Gibbons and Charlotte Catholic will remain in the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The NCHSAA announced Thursday that a vote to change the association’s bylaws and kick the private parochial schools out has failed. A total of 293 votes (75 percent of the membership) was needed to ban the private schools from the association.
It’s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.
The top two seeds in the Northwest 1A/2A Conference baseball tournament advanced past the opening round Tuesday. The other two games on the schedule were postponed because of rain and storms.
Emily Worley and Lauryn Smith combined to pitch a one-hitter, and West Stokes’ softball team beat Bishop McGuinness 11-0 on Monday in the opening round of the Northwest 1A/2A Conference tournament.
