Wilkes Central, the regular season champions of Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer, swept the conferenceâ€™s top awards. Senior midfielder Risa Baker was voted the leagueâ€™s Player of the Year. Uwe Ehrlich was voted the Coach of the Year.
Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.
The high jump has been good to West Wilkesâ€™ Makayla Roten this year. The junior won an indoor state title in the event back in February, then earned an outdoor 1A Midwest Region championship on May 5 at North Stokes. On Saturday at N.C. A&T Universityâ€™s Belk Track, Roten added an outdoor state title in the high jump to her collection.

The defending 1A state champion East Surry Cardinals will begin their softball title defense by hosting Alleghany later this week.
Seven baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and five from the Northwest 1A/2A made the state playoffs. The N.C. High School Athletic Association released the brackets Wednesday morning.
Senior Zach Millsaps won three gold medals, and Elkinâ€™s boys track team finished third overall in the 1A Midwest Region track and field championships, held Saturday at North Stokes High School. Millsaps crossed first in his signature event, the 800 meters, and won a rainy 3,200 meters.
Alleghany’s softball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and beat North Wilkes 4-1 in a special state playoff seeding game Thursday at West Wilkes High.
Just like last season, the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference softball tournament is shaping up to be a Wilkes County vs. Yadkin County bragging rights showdown. On one side of the bracket, regular season champion West Wilkes and Wilkes Central will compete for the right to play in Mondayâ€™s championship game. On the other side, Starmount and Forbush will duke it out.
North Wilkes got a chance to play giant killer for the second night in a row but came up just short this time. Less than 24 hours after upsetting Starmount 8-7 on Tuesday night, the Vikings took Forbush to the wire before falling 2-1 in a defensive struggle.
Itâ€™s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.
The Mountain Valley 1A/2A baseball and softball tournaments will start tonight (Wednesday) with quarterfinal games in both events. The higher seeded teams will host games in this round. The semifinals of the MVAC baseball tournament will be played Thursday at Elkin High, with the championship coming Monday at Elkin.
McKinley Johnson of East Wilkes enjoyed a comfortable victory in Mondayâ€™s Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference golf championships, played at Jefferson Landing in Ashe County.

Elkinâ€™s golf team won the final Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference match of the regular season Friday at New River in Sparta. The Buckinâ€™ Elks carded a team score of 171, five strokes better than Forbush and Wilkes Central and six ahead of East Wilkes.
