Starmount softball coach steps down

Heather Courts, who has led Starmount High’s softball program the past 13 years, has stepped down from her post. She plans to stay at the school and serve as a teacher and assistant athletics director.

No ‘senioritis’ for West Stokes softball team

West Stokes softball coach Rick McHone was a bit concerned about his team’s focus heading into Friday night’s playoff home game against Piedmont. Saturday is graduation day for the school, and standout seniors Brianna Bratcher and Emily Worley spent much of Friday afternoon going through rehearsals for the big event on the football field.

West Wilkes overcomes East Surry hurdle at last

West Wilkes was trailing East Surry 5-0 in Wednesday’s second-round state playoff contest when a sporadic downpour began. As the rain fell harder, so did the Hawks’ hits, and a rainbow over the West Wilkes campus seemed to promise a comeback just as play was halted due to lightning.

There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.

Lightning forced another postponement in the East Surry at West Wilkes playoff softball showdown. The Cardinals and Blackhawks were in the fourth inning Wednesday night when lightning halted the action. The game did not continue.

Drenching rains and thunderstorms to start the week forced the postponement of a handful of state playoff baseball and softball games involving teams from the Yadkin Valley.

East Surry used opportunistic base-running and stout defense to overcome a sluggish night at the plate Friday in the opening round of the 1A softball playoffs.

Charleston Southern softball junior Jana Matthews, a Starmount High graduate, was named Second-Team All-Big South Conference, it was announced Wednesday night during the league’s annual softball awards banquet.

West Wilkes makes history, wins softball title

The 2012 Mountain Valley Conference softball tournament was identical to last season’s in almost every way, right down to which teams faced off in each round. Even the score of the championship game was one point away from being a repeat. But there was one major difference.

Forbush softball earns another title appearance

Forbush had to draw its conference tournament seeding out of a hat earlier this week. But the Lady Falcons have left nothing to chance since hitting the field for the final week of Mountain Valley 1A/2A action. Coach Rachel Davis’ team followed up Wednesday’s 2-0 win over North Wilkes with a 4-3 semifinal victory against county rival Starmount on Friday afternoon.

West Wilkes earns another chance at tourney title

Leaving the bases loaded twice and stranding runners at second and third in two other innings might frustrate some coaches. Not West Wilkes’ softball skipper Michael Woodruff.
