Drenching rains and thunderstorms to start the week forced the postponement of a handful of state playoff baseball and softball games involving teams from the Yadkin Valley.

Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.

Softball: East Surry, West Stokes, North Stokes win

East Surry used opportunistic base-running and stout defense to overcome a sluggish night at the plate Friday in the opening round of the 1A softball playoffs.

Seven baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and five from the Northwest 1A/2A made the state playoffs. The N.C. High School Athletic Association released the brackets Wednesday morning.

Forbush soccer surges past Randleman in OT

Forbush High’s girls soccer team scored five unanswered goals – including three in overtime – to upset Randleman 5-2 in Tuesday’s state playoff opener. Jessica Tucker, Sheridan Caudle and DeAnna Wilkins netted shots within three minutes of each other in extra time to lift the Falcons. Forbush was the No. 3 seed from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. Randleman was the champion of the Pac-6.

Elkin, Wilkes Central, West Wilkes, West Stokes and Bishop McGuinness will enjoy first-round home games as the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls soccer state playoffs start this week.

Mountain Valley MVPs earn region gold

A group of conference champions from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A earned bigger prizes Saturday at the 2A Midwest Regional meet at Cuthbertson High School. Laney Browder of Wilkes Central – the MVAC’s female track MVP — earned region gold in both the 800 and 1,600 meters. Casey Evans of Forbush – the league’s male track MVP – placed first in the 100 meters and came within a whisker of winning the 400 meters.

South Stokes, West Stokes to meet for title

The Northwest 1A/2A Conference baseball finale will be an all-Stokes County affair. West Stokes and South Stokes both advanced to the league’s tournament title game with semifinal wins Thursday. West Stokes slipped past Surry Central 2-1, while South Stokes topped East Surry 5-2.

The dance card is set for championship night in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conference baseball tournaments.

Bishop McGuinness will remain in NCHSAA

Bishop McGuinness and other parochial schools like Cardinal Gibbons and Charlotte Catholic will remain in the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The NCHSAA announced Thursday that a vote to change the association’s bylaws and kick the private parochial schools out has failed. A total of 293 votes (75 percent of the membership) was needed to ban the private schools from the association.

Surry Central wins baseball game in walkoff style

Surry Central’s Ethan Wilmoth pitched a complete game Wednesday night, then won the game with a walk-off RBI single.

Realignment approved, football season extended

It’s official, area schools that currently comprise the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences will be split into three leagues starting in the fall of 2013. The N.C. High School Athletic Association officially adopted its realignment plan for the next four-year period at its spring board of directors meeting earlier this week.
