PAC swimmers compete in age group championships

Julie Hicks and Avery Tucker represented the North Piedmont Aquatic Club (PAC) in the recent North Carolina 14 and Under Age Group Championships held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Last laps for accomplished Elkin swimmers

Over the past four years Elkin High School has held the honor of watching its senior swimmers grow in their skills and move to the top of leaderboards. Among those seniors are three standout competitors who have earned their way to this Friday’s State Championship Swim Meet.

Area swimmers qualify for 1A/2A state meet

Elkin’s Sarah Singleton, North Wilkes’ Olivia Shumate and Forbush’s Noah Medwin earned top five individual finishes at Saturday’s 1A/2A West Region championship meet, held in Huntersville. The trio will headline a solid contingent from the Yadkin Valley who is headed to this Friday’s 1A/2A state meet in Cary. Singleton and Shumate have been at the state meet before. Medwin, a freshman, will be making his first trip.

Mountain Valley 1A/2A all-conference swimming

Here are the all-conference boys and girls swimming teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. The league had its championship meet last month, and many of the top swimmers will compete in this weekend’s 1A/2A regional meet.

Granite Bears finish as Northwest swim runners-up

Boys and girls swim teams from Mount Airy finished in second place in Saturday’s Northwest 1A/2A Conference championship meet at the Armfield Civic Center in Pilot Mountain. Bishop McGuinness won both titles. The Granite Bears pushed the talented Villains in the girls meet. Bishop prevailed with 160 points, while Mount Airy scored 134.5 points and Surry Central placed third with 96 points.

Lady Elks swim to another conference title

Despite the disadvantage of not having an indoor pool in the neighborhood, Elkin continues to flex its muscles as a 1A high school swim power. Elkin’s girls team repeated as conference champions on Saturday in Pilot Mountain, while the boys finished as runners-up to Forbush.

Forbush builds championship swim team

Forbush only had three athletes to commit to the swim team during the first week of sign-ups late last fall. So, head coach Mark Beuter and his assistant coaches beat the bushes a little bit, and even they were surprised with how things turned out.

Shumate, Eaton earn MVAC swim honors

North Wilkes junior Olivia Shumate and Elkin senior Cory Eaton earned top honors at Saturday’s Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference swim championships held at the Armfield Civic Center. Shumate was voted the conference’s girls swimmer of the year, while Eaton earned the boys swimmer of the year honor.

Swimmer from Elkin setting records at Salem Academy

Sierra Collins of Elkin has set two new swimming records at Salem Academy this winter. Collins now holds the Salem Academy record in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Collins has made state cuts in the 200 IM, 100 butterfly, 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free and 100 breaststroke.

Bishop McGuinness swims past East Surry

Bishop McGuinness and East Surry competed in the pool Wednesday, with the Villains winning both the boys and girls meets. Here are winners for each event:

Elkin, Dobson lead Blue Ridge swim pack

The two clubs that have dominated the Blue Ridge Swim League the past two decades finished 1-2 in the season ending championship meet this weekend at the Elkin Municipal Pool. The Elkin Wet Lightning captured first place and the Dobson Dolphins placed second. Elkin won both the boys overall high point trophy and the girls overall high point trophy.

Armfield, Yadkin swimmers compete in Tri-C finals

The Armfield Civic Center Dolphins finished the 2011 summer season with a fourth-place finish at the Tri-County Swimming finals in Kernersville on Saturday. The Dolphins — coached by Grant Simmons, Leah Tunstall and Ashley Horn — finished the eight-team meet with 468 total points.

Surry swim trio collects State Games medals

Three youth swimmers from Surry County, who each compete for the Piedmont Aquatic Club, earned medals in this weekend’s Powerade State Games of North Carolina competition in Winston-Salem. Mikki Nunn of Pilot Mountain collected five medals in the 10-and-under girls age group. Avery Tucker of Pilot Mountain medaled in three events in the 10-and-under girls age group. Palmer Duncan of Elkin picked up a pair of medals in the 12-and-under girls division.

Elkin swims past Reeves Rapids, Tiger Sharks

Despite missing several swimmers for various reasons, the Elkin Wet Lightning fended off the Reeves Rapids and Carroll Tiger Sharks in a Saturday tri-meet. Sarah Cesare and Cameron Burleson both won four individual events for Elkin. Mattie Wells, Tessa Cesare, Grace Cesare and Alex Duncan were triple winners. Maia Schweikert, Payton Nicholson and Ashton Gant touched first in two events each.
