Wilkes Central’s Jesse Massucco and Evan Day finished as the 2A state runner-up in doubles, winning three out of four matches this weekend at the Cary Tennis Center.

Wilkes Central doubles partners Jesse Massucco and Evan Day won a pair of matches Friday at the 2A state individual tennis championships. The Eagle duo, who won a conference title a few weeks ago and finished as regional runners-up last weekend, will play in the semifinals on Saturday morning.

Mount Airy tennis players win region titles

A Mount Airy singles player and doubles team won 1A West Regional honors over the weekend in Hendersonville. Matt Kessler captured the 1A West singles crown, defeating Hendersonville’s Jacob Fuquay in the championship. Kessler rallied after dropping the opening set 6-3 to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2.

Elkin cruises past first tennis playoff foe

If you happened by the Elkin municipal tennis courts after 5 p.m. Tuesday looking for a playoff match between two of the state’s top-ranked high school teams, you were out of luck. No, they didn’t move the match to another day. And no, storms in the area didn’t wash it out.

Elks, Eagles dominate MVAC tennis tourney

Elkin and Wilkes Central tennis players dominated the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference tournament, held Tuesday at the Elkin municipal courts. The 1A singles final was an all-Buckin’ Elks affair, with Tyler Macy defeating teammate Ryan Schell 6-1, 6-0. Elkin’s Jeremiah Morrison and David Bullin captured the 1A doubles crown, beating Christopher Shew and Luke Sealey in a competitive match, 7-5, 6-4.

It doesn’t look like anyone is going to catch Elkin’s boys tennis team in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. The Buckin’ Elks look well on their way to locking up another conference championship after wins against Ashe County (9-0) on Tuesday and East Wilkes (6-3) on Monday. The victories move the Elks to 13-0 overall and in control of the MVAC race.

Roundup: Starmount pitcher throws 1-hitter

Tanner Mathis threw a one-hitter, and Starmount’s baseball beat Alleghany 11-0 in a make-up Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference game Wednesday. The Rams scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to bring the 10-run mercy rule into play.
