There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.
Wilkes Central, the regular season champions of Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer, swept the conference’s top awards. Senior midfielder Risa Baker was voted the league’s Player of the Year. Uwe Ehrlich was voted the Coach of the Year.
Drenching rains and thunderstorms to start the week forced the postponement of a handful of state playoff baseball and softball games involving teams from the Yadkin Valley.
Bandys just couldn’t get Wilkes Central’s Jordan Carlton out Tuesday night. And even when Carlton left the bat on his shoulder, it proved to hurt the Trojans, who lost 12-2 to Carlton’s Eagles in a second-round state playoff baseball matchup.
Four baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and three more from the Northwest 1A/2A survived the opening round of the state playoffs Friday.
Wilkes Central’s Jesse Massucco and Evan Day finished as the 2A state runner-up in doubles, winning three out of four matches this weekend at the Cary Tennis Center.
Wilkes Central doubles partners Jesse Massucco and Evan Day won a pair of matches Friday at the 2A state individual tennis championships. The Eagle duo, who won a conference title a few weeks ago and finished as regional runners-up last weekend, will play in the semifinals on Saturday morning.
