Just a few teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences remain in the state playoffs. Here are scores from weekend playoff games in baseball, softball and girls soccer:

There are only a handful of teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and Northwest 1A/2A conferences still carrying the banner for the spring sports season. All of them reside in either Wilkes or Stokes counties.

Wilkes Central, the regular season champions of Mountain Valley 1A/2A girls soccer, swept the conference’s top awards. Senior midfielder Risa Baker was voted the league’s Player of the Year. Uwe Ehrlich was voted the Coach of the Year.

Storms force playoff postponements

Drenching rains and thunderstorms to start the week forced the postponement of a handful of state playoff baseball and softball games involving teams from the Yadkin Valley.

Wilkes Central carries big sticks against Bandys

Bandys just couldn’t get Wilkes Central’s Jordan Carlton out Tuesday night. And even when Carlton left the bat on his shoulder, it proved to hurt the Trojans, who lost 12-2 to Carlton’s Eagles in a second-round state playoff baseball matchup.

Wilkes Central’s Jesse Massucco and Evan Day finished as the 2A state runner-up in doubles, winning three out of four matches this weekend at the Cary Tennis Center.

Wilkes Central doubles partners Jesse Massucco and Evan Day won a pair of matches Friday at the 2A state individual tennis championships. The Eagle duo, who won a conference title a few weeks ago and finished as regional runners-up last weekend, will play in the semifinals on Saturday morning.

Starmount high jumper wins 2A state title

Starmount sophomore Hunter Welborn won a Class 2A state championship today in the high jump. Welborn cleared the bar at 5 feet, 6 inches in the 2A state meet, held at N.C. A&T University in Greensboro.

Elkin soccer marches on to second round

Elkin’s girls soccer team may have taken some lumps in the ultra-tough Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference during the regular season, but the strong competition certainly got the Elks ready for the state playoffs.

Seven baseball teams from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A and five from the Northwest 1A/2A made the state playoffs. The N.C. High School Athletic Association released the brackets Wednesday morning.

Forbush soccer surges past Randleman in OT

Forbush High’s girls soccer team scored five unanswered goals – including three in overtime – to upset Randleman 5-2 in Tuesday’s state playoff opener. Jessica Tucker, Sheridan Caudle and DeAnna Wilkins netted shots within three minutes of each other in extra time to lift the Falcons. Forbush was the No. 3 seed from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. Randleman was the champion of the Pac-6.
