Wilkes Wildfire wins two tourneys in April

The Wilkes Wildfire Baseball 9u captured the USSSA Beast of the East championship in Greensboro on April 21 and the USSSA Carolina Classic Championship in Kernersville on April 29.

Wilkes Wildfire Baseball 9u will be holding tryouts for the spring season on Saturday. March 3. Children must have been born on or after May 1, 2002 to be eligible to play. Coaches are looking for dedicated players with a love for the sport and a desire to learn. Travel ball and pitching experience is a plus but not a must.

Elkin, Dobson lead Blue Ridge swim pack

The two clubs that have dominated the Blue Ridge Swim League the past two decades finished 1-2 in the season ending championship meet this weekend at the Elkin Municipal Pool. The Elkin Wet Lightning captured first place and the Dobson Dolphins placed second. Elkin won both the boys overall high point trophy and the girls overall high point trophy.

Wilkes softball team takes 2nd in state

The Wilkes County girls coach-pitch softball all-stars finished as the runners-up in the Tar Heel Leagues Inc. state tournament in Morganton on July 14-17.

Wilkes all-stars capture district trophy

The Wilkes American League 7 & 8 year old boys coach pitch all-star team won the Little Tar Heel League District Two championship on Sunday, July 10. The team is coached by Chad Hayes. The Wilkes group will next compete in a 12-team double elimination state tournament in Smithfield starting July 21. The team would like to say thank you to all its parents and supporters.

Wilkes coach-pitch softball team wins district

The Wilkes County girls coach-pitch softball all-star team won the District 2 Tar Heel Leagues Inc. tournament on July 9-10. The Wilkes girls defeated the Alexander Gold team by a score of 13-6, then beat the Alexander Blue 7-5, and won the championship game against Alexander Blue 8-4. Wilkes will play in Morganton on July 14-17 in the state tournament. The team would like to thank all their fans for the support.

Wilkes’ Northern Stars finish 3rd in the state

The Northern Stars 10 &under softball team placed third in the 2011 Summer State Championships, held June 11-12 in Concord. All players on the Northern Stars squad reside in Wilkes County. The Northern Stars would like to thank the parents and sponsors for their support.

Wet Lightning launches new season Saturday

A local summer swim dynasty that hasn’t lost a meet in roughly a decade will begin the new season this weekend against one of the teams that has provided the stiffest competition in recent years. The Elkin Wet Lightning will leap off the blocks for the first time this summer on Saturday at 9 a.m. against the Wytheville Waves. Wytheville nearly ended Elkin’s run of dual-meet dominance a couple of summers ago, barely falling to the Lightning in a weekend home meet.

Wilkes Wildfire captures baseball tourney title

The Wilkes Wildfire 10u baseball team won the Pig City Open in Thomasville on June 11. The team began the tournament with a 14-4 victory over the M & M Falcons. Their second win of the day came against a determined Pilot Mountain Redbirds team, narrowly escaping by a 6-5 score. Finishing 2-0 in pool play gave the Wildfire a No. 1 seed, which put them in the championship against the Triad Inferno.

Total team effort lifts Elkin to swim titles

Before sweeping the conference championship meet on Saturday, Elkin’s swim team had to first win the logistics game. Just getting all 14 of the Buckin’ Elks swimmers to the Armfield Civic Center in Pilot Mountain proved challenging enough. Get ready for a lot of high school basketball this weekend if you’re a fan of Elkin or Starmount. Both schools will play games Friday and Saturday, part of a make-up schedule created by this week’s snowstorm.
