The Mount Airy boys and the North Stokes girls lead the way after the opening day of the Northwest 1A/2A Conference track and field championships, held Tuesday at North Stokes High.
East Surry and Mount Airy made their case Thursday that the N.C. High School Athletic Association got it wrong when putting the two schools in a conference with four Forsyth County partners and North Stokes for the 2013-17 alignment period.
Pairings and start times have been announced for next week’s 2A and 1A regional basketball tournaments in Greensboro. Girls teams from North Surry, Wilkes Central and Bishop McGuinness have advanced, as well as the boys team from West Stokes. Here is the complete 2A and 1A schedule for the Western Regional:
Girls basketball teams from Wilkes Cental, North Surry and Bishop McGuinness, as well as the boys team from West Stokes, will be Greensboro-bound next week. All four teams won sectional championships Friday night and have advanced to the West Regional semifinals, which will be held next Thursday and Friday at UNC Greensboro and the Greensboro Coliseum.
North Surry’s girls basketball team has been one of the most successful of any hoops squad in the Yadkin Valley Sports coverage area the past four years. The Greyhounds, owners of a 27-2 record this season, went 23-3 last year, posted a 20-7 mark in 2009-10 and finished 21-6 in 2008-09.
Some notes, thoughts and observations coming out of round two of the state high school basketball playoffs: We started the week with 28 basketball teams from the Mountain Valley and Northwest 1A/2A conferences in the brackets. Now we’re down to the Elite Eight.

Winston-Salem Prep, known for its high-flying offense, used stifling defense in the second half to beat West Stokes 48-40 for the Northwest 1A/2A Conference tournament championship Friday night.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association’s release of its latest conference realignment proposal Thursday certainly has the Yadkin Valley area buzzing. There are lots of opinions on the way the area’s conferences were drawn up in this latest draft, and most of the negative ones are coming out of Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain.
