Forbush soccer organizing 5K, fun run

Forbush High men’s soccer team and South Oak Ridge Baptist Church are organizing a 5K run/walk event and a one-mile fun run for May 5. The race will be called Nehemiah’s Challenge. The aim will be to provide a great day of racing as well as help raise money for youth mission trips and Yadkin Christian Ministries.

Carolina Cardinals win U14 World Series tourney

The Carolina Cardinals 14U softball team won the “Class A” World Fastpitch Connection World Series, played in Myrtle Beach on Aug. 1-7. The team is represented by players from Yadkin, Davie, Forsyth and Davidson counties. The World Series tournament consisted of teams from 10 different Eastern states.

Starmount holds on to UNIFI Bowl trophy

A soggy field and a half-hour rain delay did nothing to slow down Starmount in its annual Unifi Bowl battle with cross-county rival Forbush on Friday. Sparked by 100-yard rushing nights from three different backs, the Rams made the Falcons’ gridiron their own private playground in taking their fifth straight Unifi Bowl crown with a decisive 44-5 Mountain Valley 1A/2A victory in front of a packed crowd on both sides.

The Armfield Civic Center Dolphins finished the 2011 summer season with a fourth-place finish at the Tri-County Swimming finals in Kernersville on Saturday. The Dolphins — coached by Grant Simmons, Leah Tunstall and Ashley Horn — finished the eight-team meet with 468 total points.

A group of Yadkin County baseball all-stars is still alive in their quest for a Western North Carolina Cal Ripken state championship. Yadkin County is hosting the annual 11-and-under Cal Ripken state tournament at Yadkinville Elementary. The home team went 4-0 during pool play over the weekend and won its first bracket play match-up Sunday afternoon.
